Croatian citizenship by descent: Interview with our client, Simon Marchina Gonzalez

We have conducted an interview with our client, Simon Marchina Gonzalez, who recently obtained Croatian citizenship as a descendant of a Croatian emigrant under Article 11 of the Croatian Citizenship Act. We are grateful to Simon for sharing his personal experience, insights, and advice with others who are beginning their own citizenship journey.

We are pleased to share the touching moments of Simon taking the solemn oath on 1 November 2025 at the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai. We sincerely congratulate him once again on becoming part of the Croatian nation and on continuing to preserve and nurture his sense of belonging to it.

The rights to the photographs and their publication were granted by Simon Marchina Gonzalez on 22 November 2025.

Interview

• What motivated you to pursue Croatian citizenship, and how did you first begin exploring this option?

It was because my grandfather, who was Croatian, always spoke with great affection about his homeland. His stories made me feel a strong bond with my ancestors and a deep admiration for that beautiful country. They created in me a genuine sense of belonging that is difficult to explain.

• How would you describe your overall experience with the Croatian citizenship process and working with the law firm JURŠETIĆ & ALEKSOVSKI Ltd?

It has been a fair but very detailed process, especially regarding the requirements and verification of documents. I have great respect for the Croatian authorities for being fair, clear, and professional — but most of all for their kindness and human approach throughout the process. Without the help of the law firm JURŠETIĆ & ALEKSOVSKI Ltd, it would have been much more difficult and time-consuming, as their experience and knowledge were essential in successfully obtaining my Croatian citizenship.

• What was the most challenging part of the procedure, and how did the Law Firm’s legal support help you navigate it?

The most challenging part of the procedure was proving my grandfather’s identity, since his surname had to be slightly changed when he moved to my country because the letter “Č” does not exist in Spanish. This made it difficult to demonstrate that both versions of the name referred to the same person.
The law firm JURŠETIĆ & ALEKSOVSKI Ltd guided me through this complex step, explaining exactly which documents and evidence I needed to gather — including photographs — to confirm the connection. Their detailed instructions and experience made a significant difference in successfully overcoming that challenge.

• What advice would you give to other applicants who are just starting their citizenship journey?

First of all, I would advise new applicants to fully trust the guidance of the law firm JURŠETIĆ & ALEKSOVSKI Ltd. Their experience truly makes a difference, and following their instructions carefully is essential. At times, the waiting period can be challenging and even frustrating, but patience is key. It’s important to stay calm, stay organized, and trust the process — because in the end, all the effort and waiting are absolutely worth it once you receive your Croatian citizenship.
